About me
Hi, I’m Dylan, a full-stack software engineer based in Dundee, currently plotting a move to Cork or Dublin.
I’ve been building things since 2014, usually by running straight-on at problems that don’t come with clean instructions. I enjoy the chaos at the start of a new project, the bit where nothing quite fits yet, and you have to figure out what the system should be before you can build it. That process of untangling complexity and turning it into something solid is what keeps me hooked.
I tend to care a lot about how things are put together. Not just “does it work,” but “does it make sense,” “can someone else pick this up,” and “will this still behave in six months when everything around it has changed.” Clean, boringly reliable systems are underrated. I enjoy building them.
Most of my day-to-day is Laravel, PHP, Unpoly and I'll jump into projects using Vue, sometimes React, usually inside Docker, stitching together APIs, back-ends, and front-ends into something cohesive. I quite like Locomotive Scroll and GSAP for making fun animations, although I rarely get time or clients who want that, so I always appreciate it when I get to make something with those tools. It's been a wee while since I've used it but I enjoy C# too. I miss it so my next project is probably going to be something in .NET.
I lean toward the JetBrains IDEs out of habit (and maybe stubbornness), but I’m not super precious about it. I’ll use whatever gets the job done properly, just please don't make me use NetBeans.
I like building things that last, solving problems that don’t have obvious answers, and working with people who care about doing things well.
